Registration

Registration for the Academic Year 2011-2012

All degree students are required to enrol at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts for each academic year in order to maintain their right to study.

The enrolment period for the academic year 20112012 is from 8.8. to 1.9.2011. In case you have enrolled only for the autumn term you have to enrol either present or non-present for the spring term by 13.1.2012.

Enrolment as a present student

When enrolling a a present student, you pay the Student Union fee and fill in the registration form. The first year students, first year Master´s degree students as well as N th year students should enrol at the Study Affairs Office, Kaikukatu 4, 00530 Helsinki. All other students should enrol at the Info desk in the lobby of the Kaikukatu building. Postgraduate students must fill in the enrolment form, but paying the Student Union fee is voluntary for them and they are not entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Care Foundation.

When enrolling, the student must showa receipt for the payment of the Student Union fee (also when paid using electronic banking). Enrolment forms and paying instructions are available at the Study Affairs Office and the Info desk. You can also print the enrolment form (pdf) with the instructions (pdf).

The enrolment form and the receipt of the payment of the Student Union fee can also be sent by post to the Academy by 1 September, 2011. When enrolled as a present student,  the student will receive the Study Prospectus and the sticker for the student card.

Enrolment as an absent student

When enrolling as absent, you do not have to pay the Student Union fee. You will, however, have to fill in the enrolment form and return it to the Academy by 1 September. Those who enrol as absent students maintain their right to study, but they are not allowed to receive credits nor are they entitled to the member benefits provided by the Student Union, such as the services of the Finnish Student Health Care Foundation or discounts at student cafeterias.

The Student Union fee includes the fee for the Finnish Student Health Care Services. If you enrol as an absent student you do not pay the Student Union fee.

Forfeiting the right to study

You will forfeit your right to study if you do not enrol as a present or absent student by 1.9.2011.

In this case, you must submit a written request addresssed to the Rector for the restoration of your right to study.

A student enrolling after 1.9.2011or wishing to change her/his enrolment status (present/absent) during the academic year must pay a processing fee of 35 EUR to the Academy´s account. Bank account details are given below.

Change of enrolment status

A student who has registered as present or absent for the whole ongoing academic year can change her/his status for the spring term no later than 13.1.2012 without a processing fee. A student who has registered as absent may also register as a present student during the ongoing term with a written request submitted to the Study Affairs Office. This change of enrolment status costs 35 EUR.

If you want to study during the academic year or graduate from the academy you have to be enrolled as a present student.

If a student wants to interrupt her/his studies, the minimum time for interruption is 12 months and the interruption cannot be cancelled. During this time, the student is not allowed to receive any credits.

N th year students and the study plan

Nth year students (students who have started their studies more than six years ago and Master´s degree students who have started their studies more than two years ago) must complete a personal study plan when enrolling. These students are requested to book a meeting with the Study Affairs Officer /personal tutor on the list available at Info desk in order to complete the study plan.

Agreement on the user rights of the course and thesis work of the students

All students sign in a contract entitled " Agreement on the right to use the course and thesis work of the student ". The purpose of the Agreement is to clarify the right for non-commercial use of the student´s work completed as a part of the studies or thesis at the Academy.

Degree requirements


All students who start their studies in the autumn term 2011 will complete their degree according to the degree requirements recorded in the Study Prospectus 2010-2015. The Government Decree on University Degrees 794/2004 applies to all students of the Academy. The studies completed before this decree entered into force, on 1 August 2005, will be adopted to the degree completed in compliance with the new decree. 

Right ti study


According to the decree which entered into force on 1.8.2005 a student admitted to study for both the lower and higher university degree has the right to complete the degree iwithin a period that does not exceed the normative duration of studies by more than a maximum of two years (5.5 + 2 years). A student admitted to study only for the higher university degree has the right to complete the degree in a time that does not exceed the normative duration of studies by more than a maximum of two years (2 + 2 years).

The duration of studies does not include leave due to voluntary military service or conscription or to maternity, paternity or parent leave. The duration of studies does not include an absence of a maximum of four terms for which the student has registered herself or himself as absent.

The Finnish Academy of Fine Arts can grant an extension to the duration of studies on request for a student who has not finished his or her studies within the aforementioned period if the student presents a goal-oriented and feasible plan for completing the degree. The student must record in the plan details of the studies to be completed and the timetable for completing the degree .

In other respects, the Universities Act (558/24.7.2009) shall be observed in questions related to the right to study and the study right extensions.
