Registration for the Academic Year 2010-2011

All degree students are required to enroll at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts for each academic year in order to maintain their right to study.

The enrollment time for the academic year 2010-2011 is between 9.8. - 1.9.2010. In case you have enrolled only for the autumn term you have to enroll either present or non-present for the spring term by 14.1.2011.

Enrollment as an attending student

When enrolling as an attending student you have to pay the Student Union Fee and fill in the registration form. The first year students, the first year master students as well as the N-year students enroll at the Study Affairs Office, Kaikukatu 4, 00530 Helsinki. All the other students enroll at the Info desk in the Kaikukatu lobby. The Postgraduate students fill the enrollment form, but for them the Student Union Fee is voluntary and they are not entitled to the services of the Finnish Students Health Care Foundation.

When enrolling, the student must show the receipt of the Student Union Fee payment (even when paid through the web bank). Enrollment forms and paying instructions are available at the Study Affairs Office and the Info Desk. You can print the enrollment form (pdf) with the instructions (pdf).

The enrollment form and the receipt of the payment of the Student Union Fee can also be sent by post to the Academy by the 1st of September, 2010. When enrolled as attending the student will get the Study Prospectus, the Course Catalogue as well as the sticker for the student card.

Enrollment as a non-attending student

When enrolling as non-attendant, you do not have to pay the student union fee. You will however have to fill the enrollment form and return it to the Academy by the 1st of September. Those who enroll as non-attending maintain their right to study, but they are not allowed to receive credits and they are not entitled to the membership benefits of the student union, such as the services of the Finnish Student Health Care Foundation or discounts in student cafeterias.

The Student Union Fee includes the fee for the Finnish Student Health Care Services. If you enroll as a non-attending student you do not pay the Student Union Fee.

Losing of the right to study

You will lose your right to study if you do not enroll as attending or non-attending by 1.9.2010.

In that case you have to deliver a written request for the return of your right to study, addressed to the rector.

The student who will enroll after 1.9.2010, or who wants to change her/his enrollment status (attending/non-attending) during the academic year has to pay a processing charge of 35 EUR to the Academy´s account:

Change of Enrollment

A student who has registered as attending or non-attending for the whole ongoing academic year, can change her/his status for the spring term until 14.1.2011 without the processing charge. The student who has registered as non-attending may also register as attending during the ongoing semester with a written request from the Study Office. This change of enrollment status costs 35 EUR.

If you want to study during the academic year or graduate from the academy you have to be enrolled as an attending student.

If the student wants to interrupt her/his studies the minimum time for interruption is 12 months and can not be cancelled. During this time the student is not allowed to receive any credits.

N-year students (basis students who have started their studies more than 6 years ago and master students who have started their studies more than 2 years ago) have to make a personal study plan when enrolling. In that case the students are requested to reserve a meeting for the Study Affairs Officer /Tutoring Teacher in the list available in info desk in order to make the study plan.

Agreement on the right of use of student course and thesis works

All students fill the contract Agreement on the right of use of student course and thesis works. The purpose of the agreement is to clarify the non-commercial use of the student´s praxis or graduation work completed in the Academy.

Degree requirements

All students who start their studies in the autumn term 2010 complete their degree according to the degree requirements stated in the Study Prospectus 2010-2015. All the students of the Academy complete their degree according to the Universities Decree (115/1998) Government Decree on University Degrees 794/2004. The studies done before that are taken into consideration and included in the diploma completed according to the new university decree. 

Right to study

According to the Decree which came into force on 1.8.2005 a student admitted to study for both the lower and higher university degree has the right to complete the degree in a time exceeding the aggregate normative duration of studies by a maximum of two years (5,5 + 2 years).

A student admitted to study only for the higher university degree has the right to complete the degree in a time exceeding the normative duration of studies by a maximum of two years (2 + 2 years).

The duration of studies does not include leave due to voluntary military service or conscription or to maternity, paternity or parent leave. The duration of studies does not include an absence of a maximum of four terms for which the student has registered herself or himself as absent.

The Finnish Academy of Fine Arts can grant extension to the duration of studies on application to a student who has not finished his or her studies in the time referred to above if the student presents a goal-oriented and feasible plan for completing the studies. In the plan the student must itemise the studies to be completed and the timetable for completing the degree.

In other respects the right to study and the extended duration of studies shall be pursued in conformity with University Act (558/24.7.2009).
