LANGUAGE STUDIES AT THE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS
Only two courses in English: English Text Comprehension (2 cr) and English Oral Skills (2 cr) and one course in Swedish: Swedish Text Comprehension and Oral Skills (2 cr) are organised during the academic year. Additionally, one Finnish Basic Course - Finnish Language and Culture (2 cr) is organised every autumn term.
Finnish for foreigners
The course "Finnish Language and Culture I" (2 + 2 ECTS cr) is intended for degree students from all four art universities (The University of Art and Design UIAH, The Academy of Fine Arts, The Sibelius Academy and the Theatre Academy) who have no or very little previous knowledge of Finnish.
It is highly recommended for students who wish to acquaint themselves with the Finnish language and culture and with the country. The course is for those who want to learn basic language skills. Various exercises including vocabulary work, language structure, presentations, group work and discussions is included. You will also have a change to get to know more about the four art universities and Finnish film, theatre, design and (modern) art.
Requirements
Students are expected to participate actively in the course and to do independent homework. The cultural programme is essential part of the course. Students have to be present at least 80 % of the lessons in order to get the full 2 credits / ECTS points.
Course book is: From Start To Finnish by Leila White. (Note! You have to have the course book already in the first lesson.) The final examination is in the end of the course.
Participants
The maximum size of each group is about 30. Academy of Fine Arts has about 10 quota in the courses (only nine to ten students from the Academy). If you didn´t get in the course please check the info below: "Language studies at the language centre of the University of Helsinki".
Enrollment
Course´s enrollment list for the Academy of Fine Arts students is in the Academy´s study affairs office (enrollment to study affairs officer ).
Enrollment is firm! Before the enrollment be sure that you really want to take the course and you really have time for the course in your study schedule. Notice that studying a new language takes lots of time!
In order to keep your study place you have to be present in the first lesson, otherwise you will loose your place. If you have enrolled to the course but suddenly change your mind - please inform the study affairs officer as soon as possible (if possible, good time before the first meeting), so your place can be given to someone else.
Courses
Next Finnish Language and Culture courses will start 3th and 4 th of October 2005. Classes are held at the University of Art and Design (Hämeentie 135 C) (Group 1) and the Sibelius Academy (Töölönkatu 28) (group 3).
Target Group in the Academy of Fine Arts
The course is ment for the degree students of the Academy of Fine Arts. Academy´s exchange students can enroll to to course and they can take part of the course if there is study places left after the degree-students have enrolled.

Having complete the "Finnish Language and Culture I" you can continue your Finnish language studies in "Suomi II" - course at the Language Centre of the University of Helsinki.
LANGUAGE STUDIES AT THE LANGUAGE CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI
Students of the Academy of Fine Arts can apply for permission to take extra language courses (Finnish (basics and advanced), Germany, French, Italy, Spanish and so on) at the Language Centre of the University of Helsinki.
Students of the Academy of Fine Arts can complete language courses organised by the Centre's Language Services unit, which provides courses for a fee. The Academy subsidises the language studies of its students by paying for at least two language courses taken at the Language Services unit.
Course enrolment is accepted by the study affair officer at the study affairs office of the academy of Fine Arts. After receiving permission to take the course, the student must register for the course at the office of the Language Centre. Upon registration, the student receives an invoice that must be delivered to the administrative office of the Academy. Students are responsible for ensuring that their credits are transferred to the Academy's credit register.
