FLEXIBLE STUDY RIGHTS
The flexible study rights agreement JOO offers university
students an opportunity to take courses at other universities than
their own. The Finnish Academy of Fine Arts is one of the JOO
institutions in the Helsinki area. A new, nation-wide JOO agreement
entered in force on 1 August 2004. The purpose of the JOO agreement
is to offer students an opportunity to take courses for their
degree studies at other universities than the one they are enrolled
in. The agreement does not cover supervision for graduation
projects.
JOO STUDIES FOR STUDENTS OF THE
FINNISH ACADEMY
OF
FINE ARTS
JOO studies must be integratable with the student's BFA or MFA
degree programme. The studies must also further the professional,
theoretical and practical competence of the student.
Procedure
1. Find out about the curricula and
admission periods
of the JOO universities. Please
note! Admission is generally possible only twice a year, in
the spring and in the autumn. JOO admission forms are available at
the JOOPAS website (www.joopas.fi).
2. Indicate on the form the courses you wish to take, how many
credits they are and which university organises them (note that a
form may be used for courses at
one department of one university
only).
Remember that you must secure the permit from the Academy
and study right from the target university
before you take the course. In the case of art
studies, you must first discuss your plans with the head of your
department and ask him or her for permission to take JOO studies.
Language courses are approved by Maria Liisa Saastamoinen at the
study affairs office, for theoretical courses the permission is
applied from Riikka Stewen, the head of the Department of General
Studies.
3. Having secured the permission, you must send an application
to the department or unit of the target university where you want
to take the course. The university should send their decision
either directly to you or to the study affairs office of the
Academy. Find out where the announcement in your case will be
sent.
Please note! A copy of the JOO admission form (or forms) must be
submitted to the Academy´s study affairs office. The original form
is sent to the target university.
JOO study credits
Students are responsible for ensuring that their credits from
JOO studies are transferred to the Academy's credit register. This
is done by obtaining a credit transcript or certificate of course
completion from study affairs office of the target university and
delivering it to the Academy's office.
Additional information
More information about the JOO system is available at the JOO
website (www.joopas.fi) and the study affairs officers of the
participating universities. At the Academy study affairs office JOO
studies are handled by Maria Liisa Saastamoinen, tel. 680 33

JOO STUDIES OF STUDENTS OF OTHER UNIVERSITIES AT THE
ACADEMY
OF
FINE ARTS
The Academy of Fine Arts is a popular place to take JOO studies,
even though the Academy only has a limited capacity take in JOO
students. Tuition at the Academy is largely based on individual
tutoring and workshops.
Students wishing to complete JOO studies at the Academy are
required to have basic training in the fine arts (advanced art
studies or an art degree). University students who have not
completed art studies can nevertheless take theoretical courses
organised by the Department of General Studies.
However, JOO students may not complete entire study modules at
the Academy, such as the approbatur in painting or sculpture. JOO
studies at the Academy of Fine Arts consist currently of individual
courses only.
All courses at the Academy are not available for JOO students.
For instance, introductory courses are provided only for first-year
students of the Academy and are rarely open to JOO students.
Courses and seminars for graduate students are also intended only
for the Academy's own students.
JOO students do not have the right to a studio at the Academy.
The studios are reserved for the Academy's own students only.
JOO admission periods and duration of study right
Applications for JOO studies are accepted at the Finnish Academy
of Fine Arts throughout the year. Study rights are granted for a
period of two years.
Remember to apply for the right of study
well in advance before the course begins!
JOO admission procedure
First, find out if the Academy has
courses that fit in your own degree programme. Also remember
to check that JOO students are accepted on the course you wish to
take. Course classification -

Rajoitettu,
Suljettu - is indicated in the course catalogue and in the
electronic course and enrolment system Kopsu.

Procedure
1. Fill in the
JOO application form. The filled-in form can be handed in at
the study affairs office or it can be filled in on the web at the
JOOPAS website at www.joopas.fi. Indicate on the form the courses
and credits you wish to take. Secure the permission from
your own university (head of department, professor,
etc.).
2. After securing the permission, apply for study right from the
Academy by contacting the head of the relevant department. Please
note! JOO applicants who wish to take courses other than those
organised by the Department of General Studies must present a
portfolio of work to the head of the department. Settle a time for
an interview. The decision about your study right (positive or

can also contact the department head or study affairs office
directly to ask about the decision.
3. If the study right is granted, you must enrol yourself at the
Academy at the study affairs office. At the end of the JOO
admission process, the admission form and study permission with
endorsement must be sent to the study affairs office of the Academy
at Kasarmikukatu 36, 00130 Helsinki.

NOTE!
JOO students may only take the courses and credits they have the
permission for. If they wish to take more courses, they must apply
for a new permission (from their own university) and a new study
right (from the Academy of Fine Arts).
The study right must be applied separately for each department.
For example, you cannot apply for courses at the Department of
General Studies and the Department of Painting using the same form,
you must fill in two forms, one for each department.
JOO study credits
Apply for a credit transcript from the study affairs office and
take it to the office of your own university. (At the Academy of
Fine Arts, credits are usually transferred to the register within
about a month of the end of the course in question.)
