Call and Response / Vaihtoaskel–Hyppy

KuvA ja Southern Illinois University

Various examples of call and response phenomena have sprung up across numerous locations and eras. They are culturally dependent but are most often tied to religious rituals, political demonstration, and various forms of dance and improvisational music.

In this cultural exchange project artists from Southern Illinois University and the Academy of Fine Arts were asked to initiate a conversation, creating the beginning of an image with the intent that it would be completed by another party. Participants were randomly paired twice, beginning one edition of prints and completing a second. A great range of printmaking techniques and stylistic approaches were employed, speaking not only to the wide spectrum of possibilities of printmaking as a medium, but also the conceptual and aesthetic options available for the artists to collaboratively form and solve a problem.

This project was conceived, enacted, and coordinated by printmaking instructors Travis Janssen (Southern Illinois University) and Maija Albrecht (The Academy of Fine Arts).
